When I suggested a Frosé to my mom the other day, she gave me a blank look and said, “A what? … Sure!” My mom will pretty much try anything I suggest, even if she doesn’t know what it is. Thanks, mom, for being my enthusiastic guinea pig, er, taste tester.

Come to find out, she loves Frosé (I knew she would!). Under a blue sky and hot sun, while wispy white clouds raced overhead, we sipped our Frosés and watched the kids play with the sprinkler and squirt guns. A lazy and perfect summer afternoon!

If you’re a fan of frozen concoctions (margaritas, daiquiris), but don’t care for overly sweet drinks, this is the recipe for you. And it’s easy to make. How perfect is that!

About this Frosé

What is a Frosé? A bottle of wine, frozen fruit, a little sweetener (if you want), and ice. Whirl it all in a blender until it’s smooth and slushy, pour into a glass, and enjoy. This Frosé recipe couldn’t be easier or more refreshing.

You’ll find the printable recipe card at the end of this post with measurements, instructions and nutrition information.

Do you need a Frosé-making machine?

Nope! All you need is a blender. My advice is don’t bother with a specialized machine that takes up space on your counter. You can even make Frosé in a food processor! Don’t have either? Make a Rosé Spritzer!

Another thing you don’t need is a pre-packaged Frosé mix! Just buy the 2 ingredients, wine and fruit, and add sugar to taste. I guarantee you’ll probably end up adding less sugar than what’s found in a mix.

What You’ll Need

A bottle of red rosé: We like wine with less residual sugar, i.e. dry wine, but a sweeter Rosé is great, too. Choose a wine that you like to drink but don’t splurge on the most expensive one. That would be kind of a waste, since you’ll be mixing your Rosé with fruit and ice.

Frozen strawberries: You can buy a bag already frozen, or freeze your own.

Sweetener (optional): If you want, you can add a couple tablespoons of sugar to sweeten the drink a bit. Simple syrup, honey, or agave would work fine. The amount of sweetener you add depends on how sweet your wine is and your own personal preference.

Crushed ice: Add ice to the mixture and process it in a blender. You’ll want to serve the slushie immediately. A melted Frosé just isn’t the same.

What To Serve with Wine Slushies

Any of your favorite munchies will do. If you’re looking for some new ideas, try seasoned oyster crackers or potato chips with French onion dip. Or, for a little fancier soirée, make crostini topped with fresh tomatoes and basil or beets with orange tarragon goat cheese.

FAQs

Is Frosé alcoholic?

Yup! The main ingredient is wine which has an average alcohol content of 12%. The mixture is diluted with fruit and ice so you’ll be imbibing somewhat less than when you drink straight wine. The Make It Your Own section has a recipe for a virgin co*cktail if you’d like to omit the alcohol.

What is the meaning of Frosé?

The word “Frosé” is a combination of two words: frozen and Rosé.

Can you buy Frosé?

Although this co*cktail recipe is super easy to make, you can buy already-made Frosé in convenient drink pouches that can be frozen.

Make It Your Own

Oh my goodness, there are limitless ways you can make this drink your own! Be creative, use what you have in your kitchen, and create your own special frosty drink! Here’s a few ideas to jumpstart your creative juices:

  • Change up the wine. Just by varying the kind of rosé you buy can change the flavor of your drink. There are so many varieties available. I like the more fruit forward wines for this drink. Or try a different variety of wine such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Riesling. Please don’t spend a ton of money on the wine for this co*cktail. Save your wine dollars for when you’re savoring a glass of wine that isn’t diluted by fruit and ice.
  • Use any kind of frozen fruit (well, except for bananas). Change up the wine and/or change up the fruit! Why not?! Try a watermelon Frosé, a mixed berry Frosé, or a raspberry Frosé. Mix and match wines with the fruit you choose. Peach or mango with white Zinfandel is a really winning combination!
  • Make it boozy. Fortify your co*cktail with vodka. I’d start with ¼ cup or so, and adjust according to taste. Or try this frozen Sangria slushie!
  • Make a virgin Frosé. Skip the wine and vodka. Blend frozen strawberries, sugar or simple syrup, ice, and flavored sparkling water (such as LaCroix or Bubly) for a really refreshing drink. Or try a Strawberry Watermelon Slushy Spritzer.
  • Add a garnish: a fresh strawberry or a small wedge of watermelon on the edge of the glass is really festive. Herbs such as fresh mint leaves, lemon balm, or basil are also perfect with this drink.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

Because this is a frozen drink, any leftovers have to be stored in the freezer. Pour remaining drink mixture into a sealed container and freeze.

Make ahead tips: Freeze the strawberries up to a week in advance. Make sure you have plenty of ice and that your wine is chilled.
