Each Zoom meeting begins a few minutes before the event’s posted time, to give us time to say Hi.

New to Zoom?
Zoom is a simple to use, free, online meeting tool. If you haven’t used Zoom before, the first time you click the Zoom meeting link your web browser will download a small program that you need to install in order to connect with the meeting. We recommend you set this up in advance by downloading the “Zoom Client for Meetings” program from here: https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting
Once downloaded, double-click the file to install the Zoom meeting client and you can test your microphone and video before we start.

On a tablet or phone, it’s even easier. Download the free Zoom app onto your tablet or smartphone. Get this from your device’s app store.Type in the 10-digit “meeting number” shown on the program page. Our default meeting number for the Vancouver Shambhala Centre is 517-279-1759

Meditation Sessions
We will be online about 10-15 minutes before the meditation session starts. Before we start meditating, feel free to turn on your video so that we can say Hi and see each other. We can keep all the video feeds open while we are meditating, but please mute your microphone during the meditation session. You can turn your video camera on or off, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

Your Microphone Setting
Please keep your microphone muted at all times unless you are speaking, saying Hi, asking a question, etc. as this will help keep the audio channels free from background interference.

Sometimes the meeting “host” will mute everyone’s microphones to try to stop background noise, feedback and echos, which seem to be common with Zoom.

Classes with Streaming Video
Once we start streaming the video of the talk, please turn off your own webcam and microphone as that will improve the quality of the video stream for everyone on the meeting.

Group Discussions
When we start the discussion, please turn your webcams on so we can all see each other and then unmute your microphone whenever you want to ask a question or respond to someone’s comments. When you are not speaking, please mute your microphone again to keep the background noise to a minimum.

If you are speaking and your connection starts to deteriorate and lag, then turn off your video so all your internet bandwidth is available for your microphone. You can turn video back on after you’ve finished speaking.

In a discussion, it helps if participants set their view to “Gallery View” as this will show all participants in a grid. In “Presenter View” a limited number of participants appear in a single line of thumbnail images and only the video from the person speaking takes up most of the screen space, which can cause rapid switching if more than one person is speaking.

Tips for Presenters

If you are screen sharing a video (e.g., from Shambhala Online), then check the box “Optimize for streaming video” at the bottom of the sharing dialog box for best results.

If you are streaming a video using screenshare, you need to keep your microphone UNmuted otherwise the sound is not sent out to other participants. You may need to turn your volume to maximum for the participants to get loud enough audio.

Participants are often more reluctant to speak up in a video conference than they would be in a discussion circle. When discussion lulls, it can help participation if the facilitator makes a point of doing rounds and asking each participant in turn by name if they have a comment or question.

It is helpful to keep the chat window open at all times so that people can let the presenter know if they are having problems with the sound, or need to leave early.

Please post this message in the top of the chat window before the Zoom meeting starts, to remind participants:

Please consider a donation to the Vancouver Shambhala Centre for this class. We are suffering financially, scarily so, from the loss of just about all our donation box revenue and program revenue during this pandemic.

Here is our Donations page:

The easiest way to donate is to send an Interac e-transfer to [emailprotected]
This account is set to auto-deposit without the need for a security question.
