Smashburger Sauce
This smashburger sauce recipe is so easy to make and incredibly versatile. It’s inspired by the classic smash sauce found at the Smashburger restaurant chain, and the secret sauce at Shake Shack.
Not only is this sauce so tasty, it’s also incredibly easy to make. Feel free to make this smash sauce ahead of time, and store it in the fridge until you are ready to use it. This smash burger sauce is not only perfect for smashburgers, or regular homemade burgers, but it also makes a wonderful dipping sauce for fries, onion rings, or chicken tenders.
Ingredients
- Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise is what provides the creamy base for this special sauce. I’m a big fan of Primal Kitchen’s Avocado Oil Mayo as it’s Whole30 compliant and made with avocado oil, rather than canola oil.
- Ketchup: Ketchup provides a bit of sweetness to this delicious burger sauce.
- Mustard: You can use yellow mustard, dijon or stone ground mustard for this smash burger sauce recipe. Primal Kitchen makes a fantastic Dijon mustard.
- Pickles: I typically use finely chopped dill pickles in this recipe, but you could also use sweet pickles, or sweet pickle relish depending on your taste.
- Garlic Powder: I love adding a touch of garlic powder, for a little extra burst of flavor. Simply Organics is my favorite brand.
- Paprika: You can use regular or smoked paprika, either one will be fantastic in this recipe.
Instructions
- In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, chopped pickles, garlic powder and paprika, and stir to combine.
- Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
Tips And Tricks
- Give It A Stir: If making this delicious sauce in advance, be sure to give it a good stir before serving.
- Make Ahead: I typically use this sauce on burgers, and love making it ahead of time. It stores very well in the fridge.
- Chop The Pickles: I personally prefer to use pickles, (I love Grillo’s Pickles) but you could also use relish instead.
Variations
- Spice It Up: Instead of plain mayonnaise, try using Chipotle Lime Mayonnaise. You could also use regular mayonnaise and add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper for some kick!
- Add Sweetness: If you like your burger sauce on the sweeter side, try adding a bit of honey to the sauce.
- Thick And Creamy: If you want to add a bit more heft to the sauce, you can also stir in a spoon of Greek yogurt.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Smashburger Sauce Made Of?
A smash burger is made of ground beef, salt and pepper. You can also add in other seasonings that you enjoy. For the most flavorful burger try using an 80/20 blend of grass-fed ground beef.
What’s The Difference Between A Smashburger And a Regular Burger?
Smashburgers are made by flattening the burger into a thin patty on a very hot griddle or flat surface while it is cooking. This method helps create a juicy interior while maintaining crisp edges.
Regular burgers are made by forming the patty, placing it on the grill, and only flipping it, vs smashing it. Regular burger patties are also typically thicker than smash burger patties.
What Type Of Buns Are Best For Smashburgers?
You can use any type of hamburger bun when making smashburgers. You can use a traditional burger bun, potato bun, brioche bun, or my favorite, a sourdough bun.
How To Serve
For best results, toast your buns on a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Once toasted, slather this burger sauce on the inside of the top bun and bottom bun, then add your burger patty, and favorite burger toppings and enjoy. This sauce tastes best at room temperature.
How To Store
Store this flavorful burger sauce in an airtight container in the fridge. It will last for 4-5 days. Remember to give it a stir before serving.
